Halle Berry takes..... THE CALL
The Call is a movie about a woman sat in a call centre talking to a girl trapped in the boot of a car.  Not exactly the most dynamic set up in cinema right?  Two central characters unable to move from confined, cramped and mundane locations. I felt apprehensive.  This apprehension intensified with the ominous appearance of the WWE wrestling logo at the beginning of the film.  Perhaps it's just me, but tense psychological thrillers and the world of pro-wrestling are a bit, well, chalk and cheese.

'The Frozen Ground' (2013) directed by Scott Walker

Jamie Edwards of Magic FM is full of shit.  This isn't in anywhere near the same league as Seven.
When does entertainment tip over into exploitation?  This is a film about the exploitation of women; encompassing everything from casual misogyny to child abuse to rape and, naturally, the cold-blooded, sadistic murders we know and love.  So far, so Hollywood.  What sets The Frozen Ground is that this is a  true story.  This verisimilitude is unique selling point of the film: a historical recreation of real life horrors.  The question worth asking then, is why.  Why are we being told this story, to thrill and shock us, or to educate and inform?

‘The Iceman’ (2012) directed by Ariel Vromen

The Iceman is a monster story told from the point of view of the monster.  Richard ‘The Iceman’ Kuklinski was one of the most prolific known hitmen in US history, who claimed to have killed between 100 and 250 people both at the behest of his mob employers and simply because he had an innate compulsion to kill.  The name ‘Iceman’ was applied by the press in reference to his tactic of freezing the bodies of his victims, then thawing them out at a later date so the police couldn’t estimate a time of death.  Kuklinski was as sinister a human being as its possible to imagine; a killer taking pride in his work and experimenting with the best ways to kill, using, variously, guns, knives, explosives, tire irons, poison, garottes - even beating people to death with his bare hands “just for the exercise”.
